On macOS Catalina when the download completes you'll have GarageBand 10.3.5, which is the last compatible version. The current version requires macOS 11.0 or later, but you can download the last compatible versionĬlick the download button. You'll be greeted with a different dialog window: From the App Purchase History page click the download button. If you try either of the above methods you'll be greeted with the same error message as earlier: You cannot click on the download button from the GarageBand app page. You cannot click on the download button from the app Search results. Now, there are two ways you cannot install GarageBand 10: You may need to Sign Out/Sign In a couple of times, or even reboot your Mac, but it should appear within a few minutes. You don't need to let the download finish, you can cancel it.īack on your own Mac App Store (on Sierra through Catalina) you should be able to go to your App Purchase History (click on your Apple ID in the bottom-left corner of the window) to see the new GarageBand app at the top of the list, being your most recent purchase. To get around this you need to get some screen time on a Big Sur or Monterey system: GarageBand can't be installed on "Macintosh SSD" because macOS version 11 or later is required. If you never "purchased" the free GarageBand 10 app before Big Sur came out you're not going to be able to click the Get/Install buttons for it on Sierra-Catalina now due to the store validation logic throwing the error message: This app has the Package ID: 10īecause it has a different Package ID, GarageBand 10.x is not considered to be an upgrade from GarageBand 6.0.5 by the Mac App Store, but an entirely different app. This is the modern GarageBand app that was released with OS X 10.9 Mavericks back in 2013, currently in the 10.0.0-10.4.4 version range. It is a 32-bit app and so won't work on 64-bit-only operating systems like macOS Catalina, Big Sur and Monterey. This was the GarageBand app released with iLife '11 package back in 2010, in the 6.0.1-6.0.5 version range, and is probably what a lot of long-time Mac users have already. ![]() I hope those of you who are running High Sierra, if you follow my steps, will get a Garageband version that will run on your machine as I did. There are currently two entirely different GarageBand apps in the macOS App Store: I have now Garageband 10.3.5 running on my 2010 Macbook pro 17 inch running High Sierra. I accidentally pushed the metronome button and was getting a clicking sound, but I figured it out and turned that off. Under about Garageband it says I now have version 10.3.5. After the "Compete Sounds" download I clicked on the Garageband Icon again and the program is running. I said yes, but then immediately regretted it because I thought that it would be the thing that would make the program incompatible with my Mac and High Sierra. I clicked on the icon again and it asked if I wanted Complete Sounds. It asked if I wanted to upload the latest version of Garageband and I closed the popup window. What it downloaded was Garageband 10.3.2. I thought that it was going to download the latest Garageband and that after the hassle of downloading it I would probably get a message that I couldn't use the program, but it didn't. ? I clicked on it and it began a download. ![]() I went back to my Applications menu and there was a Garageband icon there that wasn't there before. I went to download Garageband from the App Store but was given the message that I needed Big Sur 11 and I didn't have it so I wasn't going to be able to download Garageband. Perhaps Apple had some internal record that I had purchased it with my Macbook Pro, but it was not on my list of purchases. My first purchase of a Macbook Pro came with Garageband on its CDs. I've owned Macs for a very long time, decades. I went into my Apple purchases as was recommended here to see if I could find Garageband there to upload.
